A dream and passion brought to life

The Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre was founded in 1986 by Gordon and Yvonne Blankstein on 55 acres in the temperate rainforest of the Fraser Valley near Fort Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

It has since expanded to over 300 acres, and has hosted over 50 species of rare and critically endangered animals over the past 25-years. The facility features a large main barn, vet and keeper service areas, several hoof stock barns, an aviary complex and catteries, as well as the Vancouver Island Marmot breeding facility, the new Northern Spotted Owl Habitat, and a new Spotted Frog wetland. There is also a small Education Centre for BC School groups, Community Groups, and other interested visitors who can reserve a presentation and tram tour of the wildlife conservation facility.

Mountain View has become a modern wildlife “ark”, dedicated to the preservation of endangered wildlife genetic material for the future. Conservation facilities like ours work together in a cooperative effort to save as many species and habitats as possible for generations to come. While the ultimate goal of conservation is the preservation of animals in their native habitat, this is not always possible. Therefore, we strive to give our captive animals the very best conditions in which to live and breed, with the intent of releasing offspring, in family groups, back into the wild when and where possible.

All our breeding and re-introduction programs are adjusted to the individual behaviors of the species at risk. Our success, we believe, is that we have very large habitats that allow natural behaviors of species, and that our facility only operates non-invasive educational tours for students, teachers and other visitors to our Conservation Education Centre.

In 2006, Mountain View was co-awarded the Conservation Award by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) for our work helping save the Vancouver Island Marmots from extinction.

Our immediate plans are to expand our Canadian Species breeding and research programs, build new  natural habitats, also expanding our Education and Wildlife Interpretation Centre.
