INTERESTING TIDBITS
- Males are black and females are brown with a white ruff around their neck. This difference in appearance caused researchers to believe at one point that they were separate species.
- As with all species of Lemur, their mode of locomotion is on all-fours.
- Lemurs are the main prey of the Fossa and a variety of birds of prey.
- They live in groups of 4-15 members, usually with equal numbers of males and females.
- Lemurs are prosimians, meaning they are primates of the lowest order and furthest away from human beings.
- Lemurs and all animals living on Madagascar are rapidly declining in number due to heavy deforestation and habitat loss. Only 10-20 % of the islands forests remain intact. There are several reserves and parks being established to help save all Madagascan species.
