WILD STATUS
Critically endangered.

DISTRIBUTION

Only found in Turkmenistan, an independent country from the former USSR

SIZE
Height: up to 1.4 m (4.5’) tall.
Weight: up to 181 kg (400 lbs).

HABITAT
Steppes, deserts and vast semi-arid grassy plains.
 
REPRODUCTION
Single foal after 13 month gestation period.

DIET
Mostly grass or will browse on branches and shrubs when grass is in short supply.
 
INTERESTING TIDBITS
  •  Kulan live in herds led by a dominant male or older female.
  •  Their coat becomes very dense in winter.
  •  Mane is naturally very bristly.
  •  Kulan can run at 35 miles per hour for extended periods of time.
  •  Not domesticated.
  •  Kulan are hunted for skin and hide.
  •  Kulan are very closely related to the Onager.
