Addax Breeding and Re-introduction Program
The Addax program was started in 1987 with the arrival of our first male. The first Addax births at Mountain View were in 1992. Currently there are 2 herds averaging 10 to 12 animals in each herd. New births are a regular occurance and our herds are healthy and thriving.
September 2007
The addax breeding program this year has produced six new calves and we expect a few more new births before winter. This success speaks volumes to the nature of our animal husbandry approach. Mountain View creates wide ranging open areas for the addax to roam. There are trees, ravines, and open grass lands for them to move in. This creates very little stress on the herd and as a result we have continueing success with our breeding program. The six addax returned to Senegal in December are reported to be adjusting well and breeding successfully. It gives us great hope that these animals that are extinct in the wild, will be rebuilt with the efforts underway in Senegal and Mali.
December 2006
On December 11, 2006, Mountain View successfully shipped a family unit of six young Addax antelope to Dakar, Senegal, as part of our re-introduction program. Our partnership with the National Parks of Senegal and Mali, along with conservationists from Isreal and San Diego, is the beginning of a nine year commitment to returning various endangered hoofstock to North Africa. Our Addax population will continue to provide family units for re-introduction to Senegal and we expect to ship another group in 2007.
Reports from Senegal are positive; the young Addax from Mountain View are acclimatizing well and are healthy. The Addax will continue to live and breed at the 100,000 acres Goembeum Reserve in Senegal and their offspring will eventually relocate and be released into Mali within 3-4 years. Mali has a natural game reserve that will receive the addax and protect them for future generations.
