South-east Asia, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Laos.
SIZE
Length: 18-21 cm (5-6”)
Weight: Approximately 450 gm (1 lb)
HABITAT
Arboreal - tropical rainforest.
REPRODUCTION
One baby (occasionally 2) every 12-18 months, after a 190-193 day gestation. Young are born with eyes open and immediately cling onto the mother’s belly.
DIET
Insects, slugs, snails, lizards, birds, fruit, and small mammals.
INTERESTING TIDBITS
- Pygmy Slow Loris have round heads, small ears, dense wooly fur and almost no tail.
- These animals frequently hang by their feet so that their hands are free to grab food, eating it upside down.
- They sleep curled up in a ball with their head and arms buried between their thighs and they do this while still clinging onto a branch.
- Nocturnal, they spend much of their day curled up in a tree hole or dense vegetation.
- Pygmy Slow Loris live relatively solitary lives within small family groupings.
- They are territorial and mark their area with urine.
- Threats include deforestation and habitat destruction.
